About the Mokopuna Curriculum Pathway

Titiro whakamuri, kia anga whakamua
Look to the past in order to move forward

Te Whāriki is a child-centred and learning-oriented curriculum that guides the educational foundations, approach and practices of Kōhanga Reo. The core principle that underpins Te Whāriki is ‘to empower the child to learn’. Its unique qualities stretch back to infinity, to ancient times, to ancestors and their deeds.

Te Whāriki is built on a foundation of Māori values and belief systems such as:

  • Mana - having authority, prestige, power, ihi, having rank and essential inner force

  • Wehi - being awe-inspiring, manaaki, showing respect, and aroha, having love and compassion

  • Whakapapa - genealogy, tūrangawaewae, identity, te reo, language and tikanga etiquette and behaviour

  • Pūrakau (story), waiata (song) and kori tinana (physical activity)

And it seeks from us:

  • Oku tūrangawaewae (self-knowledge) – knowing who we are, what we are, and why we are the way we are helps us be good to ourselves, and the children entrusted to our care. With self-knowledge comes self-belief, self-value, and self-love, all of which will determine our level of commitment to the children we serve, and the quality of that commitment

The possibilities for the development of the mokopuna are infinite. When we weave a strong and secure whāriki-foundation we develop a strong and secure individual. When we nurture the mokopuna in love and respect, we build an individual with mana and power and confidence.

“Ko Te Whāriki te mokopuna. Ko te mokopuna Te Whāriki.”
“Te Whāriki is the child. The child is Te Whāriki.”

Nā Kahurangi Tilly Reedy

Te Whāriki: He whāriki mātauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa early childhood curriculum (1996) was one of the first national curriculum documents for early childhood education. Highly regarded in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally acknowledged, it was developed using a partnership approach as envisaged by te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The development of Te Whāriki was led by Dr. Helen May and Margaret Carr (University of Waikato), and Dr. Tamati Muturangi Reedy, and Tilly Te Koingo Reedy (Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust). May and Carr consulted widely with the early childhood sector while Reedy and Reedy engaged in widespread consultation hui with Kōhanga Reo whānau, kaumātua, and leading Māori educationalists.

The consultation process led to the development of ngā kaupapa whakahaere (principles) and ngā taumata whakahirahira (strands), and the use of the whāriki as a central metaphor. On behalf of the Kōhanga Reo movement, Reedy and Reedy gifted the Māori principles, strands, and metaphors to the wider early childhood education community, who joined them as kaitiaki of this taonga.

Updates to Te Whāriki over the years have left the ngā kaupapa whakahaere (principles) and ngā taumata whakahirahira (strands) untouched. They continue to provide a sound framework for defining two distinct curriculum pathways: one bicultural, and one uniquely indigenous, each with its pedagogy, making it clear that both pathways are of equal status and have mana in their own right.
