Pay Parity: Supporting Quality Immersion for Mokopuna
Ko te reo he taonga ko te mokopuna te tino taonga.
The language is our priority the mokopuna is our purpose.
Pay parity helps strengthen Te Kōhanga Reo by recognising the qualifications, experience and te reo proficiency of kaimahi. It also supports growth and development across the movement.
In this short video, Mihi and Damien share their thoughts on the difference pay parity is making for Kōhanga Reo.
Pay parity supports kaimahi at every stage of their journey, from kaiāwhina through to experienced kaiako. By recognising skills, qualifications and reo proficiency, it helps create meaningful career pathways and supports the retention of experienced kaimahi within our Kōhanga Reo.
A stable and supported workforce helps strengthen the quality of language immersion that mokopuna experience every day. It also helps Kōhanga Reo maintain continuity and build capability over time.
Since pay parity began, 314 Kōhanga Reo have chosen to participate.
At the same time, Kōhanga Reo continue to grow. Over the past two years, mokopuna enrolments have increased by more than 2,000, reflecting growing interest from young whānau.
As more whānau choose Kōhanga Reo, investing in skilled kaimahi becomes increasingly important. Pay parity helps support and retain the people who nurture and teach our mokopuna every day.
When we support our kaimahi, we strengthen te reo Māori. Stronger reo immersion helps create positive outcomes for mokopuna and supports whānau into the future.
