This pānui is to advise that the transfer of early childhood education regulatory functions from the Ministry of Education (MoE) to the Education Review Office (ERO) has now been confirmed.

From 1 September 2026, ERO will become responsible for the licensing, certification, and regulatory functions currently carried out by the MoE

There is no immediate action required from Kōhanga Reo. Until Friday 28 August 2026, Kōhanga Reo can continue to work with their usual local MoE contacts.

Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust is working with both the MoE and ERO to understand the operational changes and ensure the transition recognises and protects the kaupapa of Te Kōhanga Reo.

Throughout this transition, we ask that any regulatory communications or enquiries relating to Kōhanga Reo continue to be directed through your Tari-ā-Rohe in the first instance. This will help ensure information is coordinated, consistent, and appropriately considered within the context of our kaupapa.

Further information and guidance will be shared with Kōhanga Reo as the transition progresses. In the meantime, please continue with your usual processes and contact your Tari-ā-Rohe should you have any questions or concerns.
