Purpose
Te Kōhanga Reo whānau are invited to nominate candidates for the 2026 election of Trustees to the Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust Board (the Board). This letter outlines the election process, explains what is happening, and highlights the key dates.

About the Trust and the Board
The overarching purpose of Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust (the Trust) is to promote, support and encourage the use and retention of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga within a cultural framework. As kaitiaki, the Board provides strategic oversight and governance to uphold and strengthen the kaupapa of Kōhanga Reo.
Seats available in this election
Under the Trust Deed, the Board must consist of no fewer than six and no more than ten trustees. In 2026, five trustees will be elected, one from each of the following rohe:
D5/11 Waiariki/Tūwharetoa
D6 Te Tai Rāwhiti
D9 Ikaroa
D10 Te Wai Pounamu
D12/14 Mātaatua/Tauranga Moana.
Eligibility
All candidates must comply with the process and timelines outlined in the election information. In addition, candidates are required to meet the eligibility criteria specified in clause 6.11 of the Trust Deed.
Term of office
Elected trustees will serve a five‑year term, as provided under clause 6.9 of the Trust Deed, unless they resign in writing before the end of their term.
