We are excited to announce that applications for the 2026 He Manu Pīrere nō Te Kōhanga Reo scholarships are now open.
These scholarships support graduates of Kōhanga Reo engaged in full time tertiary study or vocational training, including trade apprenticeships. They are designed to help ease the financial pressures that can come with education and training, and can be used for course fees, materials, travel, or other study related costs.
The following scholarships are available in 2026
He Kete Whakairo - Tā Hemi Henare PhD scholarship 1 x $10,000
(paid in three installments)Ngā Kete Pīngao - Masters scholarships 5 x $2,000
Ngā Kete Kiekie – Postgraduate scholarships 4 x $1,500
Ngā Kete Harakeke – Undergraduate scholarships 19 x $1,000
He Ringa Raupā - Trades scholarship 5 x $1,000
As part of this year’s application, you will be asked to share a brief kōrero in writing, and a short supporting video submission, including:
Why you are applying for a He Manu Pīrere scholarship
What you are studying, or the training you are undertaking
Your Kōhanga Reo journey and connection to the kaupapa
How the scholarship will support you to succeed
Who can apply?
To be eligible, applicants must:
Be a graduate of Kōhanga Reo, having attended for at least two years
Be enrolled full time in a recognised New Zealand tertiary institution or trade training programme
Demonstrate their commitment to te reo Māori and the kaupapa of Kōhanga Reo
