Ake Ake Ake – A forever language: Māori Language Week 2024
Korero Māori: Ki ngā wāhi katoa, i ngā wā katoa.
We’re in the midst of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2024 (Māori Language Week). This year’s theme, “Ake Ake Ake – A Forever Language”. This reflects the enduring strength and resilience of te reo Māori, a language that continues to thrive and adapt with each generation.
For Kōhanga Reo, te reo Māori is the foundation of everything we do. It’s not just for one week—it’s a living, breathing part of our kaupapa and the future of our mokopuna. This week is an opportunity to stand together to uplift te reo and celebrate how it continues to shape our identity and the legacy we leave behind.
A special waiata to mark the week
To celebrate this year’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, a beautiful new waiata, “Mōu”, has been released, celebrating the resilience of te reo. We encourage you to listen, reflect, and share it with your mokopuna as part of our collective journey to strengthen our language.
How can you get involved this week?
Korero Māori: Speak te reo Māori wherever you are—at home, at work, or in the community.
Join in waiata: Use this opportunity to teach your mokopuna the special waiata “Mōu” and explore the deeper meaning behind its words.
Reflect and share: Talk with your whānau about the importance of te reo Māori and how it connects us to our heritage, our past, and our future.
We encourage all our whānau to continue making te reo Māori a priority in your homes and communities, not just during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori but every day. Together, we will ensure our language remains Ake Ake Ake – forever.
Ngā mihi nui,
Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust
