Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust is excited about the Māori Television (TV) series Tōku Whare Kōhanga Reo. This was a joint collaboration between Māori TV and Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust Board, which was intended to serve two key purposes:

Houhou i te rongo – There was a desire by the Kōhanga Reo National Trust Board and Māori TV’s then CE, Keith Ikin, to reestablish open dialogue between the two parties in an effort to promote positive messages about Kōhanga Reo and te ao Māori. It was also to acknowledge that there was a symbiotic relationship between the two, because while they both serve different parts of the spectrum, they were unified on Te Reo and promoting whānau.

Promotion of Kōhanga Reo – For a long time Kōhanga Reo has been under-resourced and under-funded by successive governments, to the point where many of our Kōhanga Reo buildings have become unfit for purpose. ‘Tōku Whare Kōhanga Reo’ was an opportunity to inject energy and resource into those who would benefit the most, our mokopuna, while promoting the kaupapa at the same time.

Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust must acknowledge the support of Te Puni Kōkiri, the Ministry of Education, our Whānau Card providers, John Cribb and our property team, our carpenters, sparkies and all the trades people who worked on each individual Kōhanga Reo. We also would like to thank Māori TV’s Nicole Horan and our Manu Pīrere presenters, Nathaniel Howe and Te Atakura Pewhairangi who shone a bright light onto the faces of our kuia, koroua and mokopuna.
Finally a great big mihi to our Kōhanga Reo whānau who turned up and did the hard yards, ngā mihi nui mō ā koutou mahi me ā koutou manaaki māuri ora!
