1-Kingi Kiriona 2013 Matatini

Te Iti Kahurangi, has made an impact on the Kapa Haka scene, since humble beginnings of 12 performers. They were formed in 2003 and their bold style has enticed, titillated and intrigued avid kapa haka freaks with their composition and powerful vocals. They have certainly pushed the boundaries of performance while treading the fine line of maintaining a solid performance founded in tradition.

The question was raised is Kapa Haka merely entertainment? Or is it a vehicle to challenge the status quo. The obvious answer to both questions is yes, it does, but one can never be sure where controversy will raise its head and none were more surprised than Iti Kahurangi.

Māori TV did not much approve of Iti Kahurangi’s haka, but the response to censor was maybe over the top and the reaction by the Kapa Haka public to lobby for its prompt reinstatement within the performance of the online broadcast was testament to the passion people have for this art.

We spoke to Kingi Kiriona their Male leader about his time at Kōhanga and their Matatini 2015 experience.

I whānau mai a Kingi Kiriona ki ōna mātua a Te Waikōhai raua ko Noho ā he uri no Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Ruanui me Ngāti Apa he mokopuna hoki no Te Kōhanga Reo o Taniwaka, anei ōna mahara nui mo aua wā.

Ko ngā kuia nā rātou nei au i opeope i roto i te kōhanga, kāore e tawhiti i ōku whakaaro i ēnei rā tonu nei.  He kuia mauritau ēnei, he ngākau māhaki.

I te wā i tīmata nei au, kāore ō mātou whare, kāore hoki he moni.  Ko ngā mea katoa, nā ngā whānau me te hapori whānui o Tāmaki-nui-ā-rua i takoha.

Heoi tā mātou haka, he kupu ueue, he kupu patou, he whakatara ki a Whakaata Māori kia mutu te whaiwhai i tā te Pākehā titiro ki ngā take Māori.  I toko ake te whakaaro mō te haka nei i taku mātaki i ētahi pūrongo, pērā me ngā pūrongo mō Awanuiārangi me Te Kōhanga Reo.

Ahakoa taku tautoko kia riro mā tātou anō tātou e wewete,  e kōrero, ko te mate o aua pūrongo rā ki a au, kāore i tino rerekē ki tā te Pākehā titiro; huri rawa ake ki teihana kē, ko aua kōrero tonu rā, ko aua haehae tonu rā.  Ka mutu, nō te kīnga mai o Te Ture kāore Te Kōhanga Reo i hapa, he iti noaiho ngā korero i puta mō tērā; kāore i eke ki te nui o ngā korero i puta mō ngā whakapae mahinga hara.

E kore e taea te whakahē ngā mahi papai kua oti nei i a Whakaata Māori i roto i ngā tau.  Heoi, kei noho ko tērā hei take e mataku ai tātou ki te āta wetewete i āna mahi, nā te mea hoki, ‘nā tātou, mā tātou’.

Hei kōrero whakamutunga ka riro ki a Kīngi Kiriona.

Ko ngā katoatanga o te hui, me mihi rā ka tika!
