In this foundation programme you will build your te reo Māori skills and knowledge of karakia, mihimihi, waiata, and basic situational phrases.  You will also learn about the kaupapa of Kōhanga Reo.

You will be able to:

  • Introduce yourself in te reo Māori, and conduct simple conversations using basic te reo Māori skills
  • Learn and perform Kōhanga Reo waiata
  • Learn and perform karakia
  • Demonstrate understanding of basic Māori cultural practices applied within Kōhanga Reo and on marae settings
  • Learn alongside and engage with tamariki,  mokopuna, whānau and kaimahi

At the end of this programme, ākonga will receive:

  • Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua), Level 1  
  • Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua), Level 2

How you will study

Through blended delivery including set training days, wānanga, hui, workshops, online, alongside pakeke and kaumātua, at home or with your Kōhanga Reo whānau or Purapura.

Entry Criteria

To enrol on this course, kaitono (applicants) must:

  • Be 17 years of age or older
  • Have a desire to learn basic reo Māori skills in a Kōhanga Reo setting
  • Be supported by your Kōhanga Reo whānau
